Total Communication Environment

In Scoil Carmel JNS, we are a Total Communication Environment, where every child is supported to communicate in the way that works best for them. We believe that all children should feel seen, heard, understood and valued. Our approaches are guided by best practice and are developed in collaboration with relevant outside agencies where applicable, ensuring that supports are appropriate, consistent and evidence-based.

Across the school, we use a range of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) communication supports which are tools and strategies that include visuals, symbols, communication boards and devices that support children to communicate in a variety or different ways. These approaches benefit all learners and can be especially important for some children who need additional communication support.

We use classroom timetables, communication boards in the school yards and Lámh signs, all of which help children understand routines and express themselves. We also provide more individualised support to some children. This includes personalised visual systems, home-school communication journals and iPads with specific AAC software, prescribed by a Speech and Language Therapist, to support their communication needs in school.

By creating a communication-rich environment, we aim to ensure every child can participate fully in school life, build confidence, and feel genuinely connected to their learning and community.
