How We Use ICT In Scoil Carmel JNS

In Scoil Carmel JNS, we use ICT (Information and Communication Technology) in a simple, carefully structured and age-appropriate way to support teaching and learning. Teachers use tools such as tablets, interactive whiteboards, educational apps, short videos and digital storytelling to make learning more engaging and accessible for young children. These tools are periodically used to help to bring lessons to life and support children in understanding new ideas in a visual and interactive way.

Children periodically have access to mini laptops, Bee Bots, Blue Bots and LEGO Spike. When children engage with them, it is to:

  • Support literacy and numeracy through fun, interactive activities

  • Enhance play-based and hands-on learning

  • Allow children to practise skills at their own pace with teacher guidance

  • Encourage communication, creativity and curiosity

  • Introduce safe, basic digital skills appropriate to early learners

ICT is always used purposefully and under teacher supervision. The focus is on supporting learning outcomes, not on screen time itself and ensuring children experience a balanced, active and developmentally appropriate classroom environment.

Mini Laptops

Mini laptops are used in a structured, age-appropriate way to support learning through educational games and teacher-approved websites. Children use them to practise literacy and numeracy skills, research projects, complete simple interactive tasks and build basic ICT and digital citizenship skills.  All activities are carefully chosen by the teacher and are linked to classroom learning.

Bee-Bots and Blue-Bots

Bee-Bots are simple floor robots used in Junior and Senior Infants to introduce early coding skills. Children programme them by entering a sequence of commands (e.g. forward, back, turn) and then watch the robot carry out the instructions. This helps develop early understanding of sequencing, direction and problem-solving. Blue-Bots are similar to Bee-Bots but can also be controlled using a tablet or computer via Bluetooth, allowing for slightly more advanced activities.

LEGO Spike

LEGO Education SPIKE Essential Set is used in 1st and 2nd Class to introduce early coding and problem-solving through play. Children work collaboratively to build simple LEGO models and use the LEGO Spike app to programme them using basic commands. This helps develop sequencing skills, logical thinking, and teamwork in a fun, hands-on way.
