Digital Citizenship Skills

Supporting children to develop their digital citizenship is essential in today’s digital world, where technology is a natural part of their everyday lives. As educators, we have a responsibility to guide them in becoming safe, responsible, and positive digital citizens. Even in the early years, children are engaging with digital devices, so it is important that they develop good habits from the very beginning. In Scoil Carmel, we use digital technology in age-appropriate ways to support teaching and learning, alongside digital citizenship lessons that helps them learn the following:

Staying Safe

• Not sharing personal information

• Knowing to tell an adult if something feels wrong

Being Kind and Respectful

• Using kind words online

• Understanding there is a real person behind every screen

Making Good Choices

• Using age-appropriate apps and games

• Learning about screen time and online content

Taking Care of Devices

• Using devices carefully and following simple rules

Learning with Technology

• Using digital tools for educational purposes

Digital citizenship is an important part of learning in the new Primary Curriculum, where being a digital learner is recognised as one of the key competencies. It supports children in becoming safe, confident and responsible in how they use technology in their everyday lives. This learning connects with:
